Hookup - Part 5 (Brakes) - 06/12/2020

More and more and more work... closer and closer to getting it done.


Mix ATF and acetone 50-50 and you get a very potent rust dissolver. There's a lot of potentially stuck fittings...


The rear lines look bad and are coated in this stuff.


Popped the rear fitting loose on the master cylinder.


Bench bleeding the new master cylinder.


Pop loose the old brake line hose on the driver's side.


Driver's side caliper is removed, note the missing stabilizer bushing. Never seen that before.


Old rotor looks like it's seen better days. I probably could have saved it as there is plenty of life left...


Spindle looks good, so much grease!


Parts are taken off and cleaned up. The bearings are in amazing shape, whoever did them last didn't skimp on grease.


Driver's side rotor is installed quite simply. It spins over at least 5 times before slowing down.


New pads are installed without a fuss.


Driver's side is back together and done. Note the original hose is back on. Why? Because the hose I ordered years back was the Delco 15.8" hose. They substituted the wrong 12.5" hose and it's too short. Annoying, but fortunately the hoses are still in decent shape for now.


The passenger side wheel hub is stuck on the wheel. I doused it in this red stuff and it comes free after 20 minutes without too much arguing.


Passenger side rotor assembly is not much better than the driver's side.


I had to beat off the passenger side caliper.


Passenger side rotor is removed. So much good grease as well on this side!


The passenger side rotor is on and the bearings are good!


Passenger side is done.


Rear drum gets redone.


Rear driver's side is done. It's like riding a bike, you never forget even if it takes a little while to remember.


Well that sucks. The fitting snapped off. Oh well, it's been bad a long while as it is completely bone dry inside.


Old master cylinder is removed! New one goes on! ...but it doesn't go on??? Oh, the master cylinder that's on the car has a deep recess on the cylinder, the new one does not. Despite being correct and all... so... yeah. Good thing the old master cylinder still functions. I put it back on.

Brakes are hard work.
