Steering Column Repair - Part 2 - 08/08/2015

Time to finish up. Mechanically it all goes back together quickly and surprisingly easy...

Most difficult part is compressing the spring back into the tilt mechanism. It's got to compress almost 2/3 of the way down just to get in. And it's one tough spring filled with much failure... Then I got creative!

I wired up the spring!

No vice, so I make due to compress the spring and tie it down.

Had to use the vice grips and channel locks but it goes in! A little like playing with a loaded gun on these springs...

Column assembled and ready to go back into the truck.

Column installed back in the truck.

The steering column joint is inside the truck unlike earlier GM ones where it's outside. Makes it easy to remove and install since it's not greasy and nasty.

Sector gear assembly, has a metal plate that covers the gear and a plastic cover that snaps into place.

Turn signal switch is back on.

Plastic cover back on.

And the column is done.

Went back together quite easier than I expected. And it worked, which is a bonus. Unfortunately the AC stopped working in this time so I've got more to do...
